What to Do When You Get a Windshield Chip

A few things that can make the difference between a repair and a replacement.

  • If the chip is dry, cover it with clear packing tape to seal out dirt and moisture.
  • If it's wet, leave it uncovered. Don't lock the moisture in.
  • Avoid extreme heat and using the defroster
  • No car washes
  • Avoid rough roads
  • Reach out to us as soon as you can, we'll take care of the rest

Windshield Chip & Crack Repair in Omaha

Professional Repair to Stabilize and Seal Your Windshield

Driving in Omaha means constant construction, traffic, and seasonal temperature swings, all of which make rock chips common. Even a small chip can spread as the glass flexes from heat, cold, or vibration.

Your windshield is a structural safety component that supports the vehicle and helps position the airbag correctly. A chip weakens the impact area, so repairing it early helps preserve windshield strength and keeps the factory bond intact.

Not every chip qualifies for repair. Understanding when replacement is the safer choice matters — here's how to tell the difference between repair and replacement .

A proper chip repair stabilizes the break, reinforces the laminated layer, seals out moisture, and improves clarity when possible. The goal is simple: restore strength to the damaged area and help prevent spreading.

Repair Time

Ready to Drive in 30 Minutes

Most chip repairs are completed in about 30 minutes total. This includes inspection, resin injection, and controlled UV curing. We follow a careful process on every repair so the resin fills and bonds correctly before you leave.

Repair time may vary depending on break type and curing conditions.

Repair Guidelines

Chip & Crack Repair Guidelines

Most repairable chips fit within the diameter of a quarter. Some short cracks may also qualify depending on size, depth, and location — especially when the damage falls within the camera viewing area of an ADAS system, which may require replacement to maintain calibration accuracy. Each break is evaluated individually for safe repair.

If the damage is large, spreading, deeply contaminated, in the driver's primary viewing area, or compromises the laminated layer, replacement is the safer option.

Repair Conditions

Conditions That Support a Quality Repair

Windshield resin cures under controlled UV light, so the glass must stay dry and shaded until the break is fully filled. Moisture, temperature swings, or early UV exposure can prevent the resin from flowing correctly. Stable indoor conditions support a stronger fill, a better seal, and consistent results during final curing.

Break Types

Types of Windshield Chips & Cracks

Not all windshield damage looks the same. The size, shape, weight, density, speed, and angle of impact of the debris that strikes the windshield all play a part in the damage it causes. The type of break affects whether repair is possible, how urgent it is, and what to expect from the result. These photos were taken in our shop — real damage we repair every day.

Windshield chip — small impact fully penetrating the outer layer of glass.

Chip

Easy repair

A small impact that penetrates the outer glass layer without cracks or pulverized glass. Usually small and easily repairable.

Windshield pit — a little white dot of surface glass knocked off, shown beside a bullseye for scale.

Pit

No repair needed

A tiny white surface nick where a minute amount of glass is missing. The glass is not penetrated, so it has no real risk of spreading.

Half moon windshield chip — tight semi-circular crack with partial cone.

Half Moon

Easy repair

A tight semi-circular crack, often with a small or partial cone. Similar to a bullseye, but not fully circular and generally repairable.

Angel wing windshield chip — two curved flare cracks opening from the center impact point like wings.

Angel Wing / Batwing

Repair soon

Two curved flare cracks opening from the center impact point like wings. Little or no cone, and likely to line crack if ignored.

Double star windshield chip — two intersecting star chips from multiple impact points.

Double Star

Advanced repair

Two intersecting star chips from close impacts or jagged debris. Multiple hit points make this a tricky repair.

Starburst windshield chip — pulverized impact point with many cracks radiating outward.

Starburst

Advanced repair

A star-style break with pulverized glass at the impact point. Less fragile than a clean star, but harder to seal without advanced repair methods and larger repair adapters.

Combination windshield break — chip with cracks radiating from a single impact point.

Combination Break

Repair soon

More than one break type from a single impact point, usually a chip with cracks through or around the cone. Most improve well after repair.

Compound combination windshield break — multiple intersecting chips from more than one impact point.

Compound Combination

Advanced repair

Multiple intersecting chips from more than one impact point. More complex than a standard combination break and challenging to repair.

Extended leg on bullseye windshield chip — bullseye with a crack beginning to run from it.

Extended Leg / Ray on Bullseye

Repair soon

A bullseye with a longer crack beginning to run. Repair should be scheduled quickly before it spreads.

Line crack windshield chip — single impact point with one crack running straight through it.

Line Crack

High spread risk

A single impact point with one crack running through it or from one side. Hard to repair and likely to spread, even after repair.

Floater crack on windshield — longer line crack away from any edge.

Floater Crack

Advanced repair

A longer line crack away from the windshield edge. Spreads readily, remains visible after repair, and many shops will not attempt it.

Ring crack on windshield — large circular crack from a round object impact.

Ring Crack

Advanced repair

A large circular crack, , often from a round object like a golf ball, baseball, or round rock. Requires advanced repair experience.

Experience & Philosophy

Experience & Repair Philosophy

123 Glass Company has provided professional windshield chip and crack repair for customers in the Omaha metro area since 2007, including Omaha, Bellevue, Papillion, La Vista, Ralston, Millard, Council Bluffs, and surrounding communities. We evaluate each break to determine whether it meets safe repair criteria. When it does, the repair reinforces the damaged area, stabilizes the break, and preserves the factory-installed windshield whenever practical.

Most chip repairs take about 30 minutes depending on the break and curing conditions. Standard-size chip repairs include lifetime coverage.

Repairing a chip early can help you avoid a replacement while keeping the original glass and factory bond in place.

Some damage cannot be repaired safely, including long cracks, heavily contaminated breaks, or impact points with missing glass. In those cases, replacement is the correct choice.

If a repair isn't appropriate, windshield replacement is available as part of our complete auto glass services.
